Prof Rodolfo Miranda open the 12th Early Stage Researchers Workshop in Nanoscience

  • The 12th edition of the Workshop organized by IMDEA Nanociencia with the participation of over 120 young researchers.
  • Prizes awarded, thanks to the Madrid Section of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry and Net Interlab.
  • The Workshop is aimed at early career scientist in order to share their research, engage in scientific discussions, and expand their network.

Madrid, 22nd December, 2022.

The 12th edition of the Early Stage Researchers Workshop in Nanoscience saw a welcome return to on-site with more than 120 in-person attendees. The Workshop was held on the 15th December with the 16 talks divided in to four thematic sessions covering different aspects of Nanoscience: Photophysics, Nanomedicine, Quantum Materials and Surface Science, and Materials.

The plenary lectures were presented by Dr José J. Baldoví (ICMOL, Universidad de Valencia) and Dr. Beatriz Salinas Rodríguez (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Gregorio Marañón). During the coffee breaks lively discussions took place with 68 posters presented –taking up all of the wall space on the ground floor of the Institute.

The Early Stage Researchers Workshop initiative began in 2010 with the purpose of bringing together early career scientists from different disciplines to present their research work in the field of Nanoscience to the public for the first time. Currently, the workshop is organized for and by young researchers, with the objective is to encourage participation in the dissemination of science, create academic links and strengthen collaborations among future research pledges.

The workshop, organized by a committee of researchers –Dr Ana Pizarro, Dr Manuela Garnica, Dr Gorka Salas and Prof David Écija- and staff from IMDEA Nanociencia, was inaugurated by our Director Prof. Rodolfo Miranda, who gave an overview of the achievements of the Institute and sent a positive, encouraging message to the young attendees. During the closing ceremony, the best contributions were awarded with prizes, generously sponsored by the Madrid Section of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry and Net Interlab. The Best Poster Communication award went to Claudia Cardozo Yusti, PhD student in the ‘Metallodrugs to Modulate Cancer Cell Machinery’ group at IMDEA Nanociencia. The Best Oral Communication prize was awarded to Saül García Orrit PhD student in the ‘Organic Photophysics and Photonics’ group.

There was a third award for the Best Twitter Communication for Noelia Rodríguez PhD student in the ‘Neural Interfaces Group’ for her excellent thread explaining the work contributing to her poster. The #ESRW Twitter Scientific Session was organized by the Institute with the purpose of bringing the participants together to communicate their results and increase their participation in diverse dissemination channels such is social media helping to foment their professional networks.

The event would not have been possible without the generous sponsorship of the Madrid Section of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry and Net Interlab. The next edition of the Early Stage Researchers Workshop is expected to be in June 2023, continuing on from the success of the return on-site attendance.
