Short bio:

M. Eugenio Vázquez Sentís is a Full Professor (Catedrático) of Organic Chemistry at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) and a principal investigator at the Singular Research Center in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials (CiQUS), where he co-leads the Vázquez López / Vázquez Sentís research group.Born in 1973, he earned his degree in Chemistry at USC in 1996. He then completed his PhD under Prof. José Luis Mascareñas, working on the design, synthesis and study of synthetic peptides that recognize specific DNA sequences.

In 2001 he received a Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) postdoctoral fellowship and joined Prof. Barbara Imperiali's group at MIT. There he spent three years developing caged compounds and fluorescent sensors for studying complex biological processes. He returned to Santiago in 2004 on a Ramón y Cajal contract and received an HFSP Career Development Award.

He obtained a permanent position as Profesor Titular in 2010. His early recognitions include the Sigma-Aldrich Young Investigator Award (2008) and the Lilly Award for the best researcher under 35 (2010).His research combines organic synthesis, spectroscopy, biochemistry and computational chemistry to develop chemical tools for biological research.

These include luminescent sensors for kinase activity and biomolecular interactions, photolabile compounds that give spatiotemporal control over biological responses, and DNA-binding agents such as metallopeptides that recognize non-canonical DNA structures.
