Perna

Dr Paolo Perna is Senior Researcher and coordinator of the Programme Nanomagnetism for Information and Communication Technologies and of the SpinOrbitronics group at IMDEA Nanociencia.

Dr. Perna holds two PhD titles, in Physics and in Material Science (2008). He is certified as Full Professor of Theoretical Physics of Matter (2019) as Experimental Physics of Matter (2020) by Italian ASN (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale). He is certified I3 researcher by Spanish AEI (Programa I3, I3/2021/1021). His expertise ranges from nanomagnetism, spintronics, spinorbitronics, oxitronics, material science to surface science and synchrotron based techniques, including the preparation, characterization and technological development of artificial magnetic nanostructures, techniques and prototypes. His activities are actually focused on i) the engineering artificially the surface/interface of nanostructures based on 2D materials, oxides and (ferro and antiferro)-magnetic materials; ii) electric and magnetic field control of spin-orbit phenomena for magneto-electric memories and neuromorphic applications

Research Lines

The group explores novel concepts in spintronics based on spin-dependent transport in low dimensional magnetic materials in which spin-orbit coupling plays an important role. These include thin films and multilayer stacks, combining ferromagnetic (FM), antiferromagnetic (AFM), perovskite oxides and 2D materials.

We resort to epitaxial growth, surface/interface and magneto-transport (including synchrotron-based) investigations, as well as nanofabrication, to engineer, characterize and design novel architectures and merge in a single device the functionalities of their individual constituents.
